10 Natural Ways to Use Lemon

Lemons are an amazing blessing to the natural home. Full of vitamin C, citric acid, flavonoids, B-complex vitamins, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and fiber; these colorful fruits can bring health to your home in a variety of ways. Here are a few of my favorites:

  1. Clean Floors. Who doesn’t love a clean, sparkling floor? We have wood floors throughout our place and little ones who love to drop all things sticky on them. A little bit of lemon juice, water and olive oil go a long way in cleaning and polishing them up!  ½ cup of lemon juice + ¾ cup of olive oil + 1 gallon of hot water
  2. Freshen the garbage disposal with a few ice cubes, some lemon peels and a pinch of salt or baking soda. Turn it on and grind it up – freshness awaits!
  3. A little coarse sea salt and a recently juiced lemon can go a long way in removing unwanted food from dirty dishes.
  4. Remove stains and odors from garbage bins and diaper pails.
  5. Soaking cut-up apples, cauliflower, bananas, pears, potatoes, and avocados in a bowl of cold lemon water helps to prevent browning.
  6. Lemon juice works beautifully as a natural astringent. For best results, apply to your face 2x per day for 10 minutes and rinsing with cold water.
  7. Lemon is both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. Gargling with lemon water may soothe a sore throat while consuming lemon water provides vitamin C for your immune system. Added bonus, making a delicious tea using alkaline water, the rind from the lemon and a touch of maple syrup, raw coconut nectar or date syrup can really help in relieving emerging cold symptoms.
  8. Bleach is highly irritable to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract and it can have any number of harmful effects on one’s health. Adding lemon juice to hot water and soaking white linens is a great way to get those whites, naturally white. After you’ve soaked your white linens and clothing in the lemon solution, rinse and wash as normal. You can also add one-half cup of lemon juice to your washing cycle in lieu of bleach.
  9. As a homeschooling mama of little ones, this one is my absolute favorite! Dip a q-tip into lemon juice and write a message on a piece of white paper. After it dries, hold it up to a lamp or light bulb to see your hidden message. This is a great rainy day activity to do indoors with the kiddos.
  10. Berry fun! What summer is complete without long summer days spent in open fields, eating fresh berries or baking pies. To remove berry stains from little hands, rub a paste of cornmeal and lemon juice, let sit then rinse off.

So there you have it, some of our all-time favorite ways to incorporate lemon in our natural home. What are some of your favorite uses for this versatile fruit?
